Hot Spots Observation • The Convergence and Dialogue between Art and Technology

■ Homology, Divergence and Integration: The Evolution of Science-Art Relations in Civilizational History and Their Reconstruction in the Era of Artificial Intelligence (Wen Zheng)

Abstract: Science and art share a common origin and coexist at the genesis of human civilization, jointly constituting a two-in-one entity for comprehending the world and expressing human existence. They were highly integrated in the ancient Greco-Roman and ancient Chinese civilizations. Since the late Middle Ages, propelled by the systematization of knowledge, rationalism, and the Industrial Revolution, science and art have gradually undergone structural separation, resulting in the opposition of the two cultures in the 20th century. This opposition has given rise to disciplinary barriers, insufficient innovation, technological utilitarianism, and the weakening of the humanistic spirit. In the era of artificial intelligence, digital technology and interdisciplinary thinking facilitate their profound integration, which represents an inevitable trend in the development of civilization and a crucial path for reshaping a comprehensive personality and reverting to human values. Based on the histories of Chinese and Western civilizations, this article systematically examines the historical logic of "homology, separation, and integration", offering academic support for the coordinated development of science, technology and humanities.

■ Pathways for the Digital-Intelligent Development of Chinese Dance: A Return to Dance Ontology and the Transcendence of Algorithmic Logic (Xiao Xiangrong)

Abstract: The advance of Chinese modernization and the cultivation of new quality productive forces are accelerating the integration of digital and intelligent technologies into cultural production and social life. Artificial intelligence, motion capture, virtual humans, real-time rendering, and multimodal generative systems are reshaping modes of artistic production worldwide, while ushering Chinese dance into a new phase characterized by datafication, intelligent technologies, and cross-media collaboration. These developments create new possibilities for creation, preservation, dissemination, and education, but they also expose dance to the risks of reducing embodied experience to parameters, detaching cultural expression from its contexts, and obscuring questions of value attribution and ethical boundaries.Focusing on the digital-intelligent development of Chinese dance, this study takes the ontology of dance as its point of departure and examines the challenges, practical foundations, and developmental choices facing the field amid the global turn toward digital intelligence. Digital-intelligent transformation should not be reduced to the technical augmentation of existing practices or to algorithmic generation. Rather, a return to dance ontology reaffirms the body as the foundation of artistic generation, cultural memory, and value judgement, while moving beyond algorithmic logic requires technological capacities to be recalibrated through embodied intelligence, cultural context, and ethical responsibility. On this basis, motion capture, AI-assisted choreography, digital archives, virtual rehearsal, immersive dissemination, and the sharing of educational resources can together form a developmental pathway grounded in the cultural and artistic agency of Chinese dance.

■ Artificial Intelligence and Protectable Expression: Authorship, Originality and Ownership (Author: Kirkman Ridd / Translator: Song Yi)

Abstract: The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creating artistic works presents many benefits as well as many challenges. While AI can be a valuable tool to assist the artist, it is important for the artist to maintain sufficient authorship and original expression during the process of creation with AI to warrant copyright protection and attribution for the resulting work. Such protection and attribution is important to financially and morally reward the artist as well as to reward those who bring the artist's work to the marketplace. Human authorship is the bedrock of protectable expression, and ethical responsibility is the bedrock of support for originality, attribution, and ownership. The informed used of AI helps express and embrace the heart of the artist so that the artistic work achieves its ultimate goal of enriching the world.

■ From Author to Aesthetic Decision-Maker: The Transformation of the Creative Subject in the Digit-Intelligent Era (Niu Hongbao)

Abstract: Does generative AI truly possess the creativity of an artist, thereby qualified as an "author"? An analysis of the Turing Test and the "Reverse Turing Test" in the context of generative AI, together with an examination of the so-called "creativity" emerging in the evolution of generative AI, reveals that generative AI algorithmically maps the specific aspects of higher human cognitive faculties, such as the intellect and the power of subsumptive judgment. However, certain elements of the higher human mind cannot be mapped through algorithmic programming: specifically, the power of reflective judgment and the a priori principle of purposiveness underlying it, as well as practice grounded in the law of freedom and the a priori principle of ultimate ends. Any such algorithmic mapping of these elements would necessarily be invalid. It is precisely this unmappable reflective judgment, together with the practice grounded in the law of freedom and its a priori principles, that serves as the anchor and foundation for human engagement with generative AI, marking the pivotal moment in human-machine interaction at which the human role shifts from that of "author" to "aesthetic decision-maker."

■ A Subjective Reflection on New Forms of Literature and Art for the General Public in the Era of Generative AI (Wei Cece)

Abstract: The tension of new forms of literature and art for the general public lies in its dual explanatory power of both "new public" of literature and art and "new forms" of literature and art for the general public. The subject form of popular literature in the media field has changed, and the new production methods prompt us to rethink the subjectivity of the "new forms" of literature and art for the general public. The deep involvement of generative AI signifies that the digital age has entered a stage of strong generation, strong reasoning, and human-machine co-creation. From the outset, the "new public" in new forms of literature and art for the general public is no longer a subject in the sense of a single author. The distributed, hybrid subject form brought about by human-machine collaboration is not a suppression of "popular subjectivity," but rather a conflict with individual-centered evaluation standards. This forces us to re-examine the applicable boundaries of the subject of new forms of literature and art for the general public and thus construct a responsible subject characterized by human-machine symbiosis, diffuse and open forms, a solid humanistic core, and clear boundaries of rights and responsibilities.

A New Introduction to the History of Art

■ Literary Disputes and the Rectification of Criticism: A Reflection on the Boundaries and Ethical Reconstruction of Contemporary Literary and Art Criticism through the Lens of the Ming Dynasty's "He-Wu Dispute" (Li Chaode)

Abstract: The "He-Wu Dispute" during the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty stands as a particularly instructive case in the history of Chinese scholarly criticism. What began as an academic debate gradually escalated into an emotionally charged conflict marked by mutual attacks, ultimately ending with the resentful death of He Canran. It thus serves as a striking example of how traditional scholarly criticism could lose its sense of proportion, norms, and ethical restraint. Using this historical case as a point of reference and considering the disorder of contemporary online criticism, this article examines how scholarly criticism can degenerate from the serious endeavor of "elucidating the Way" into a verbal weapon for "harming others." The legitimacy of literary and art criticism should be defined by the dual standards of "seeking truth" and "showing forbearance toward others." Its core principle should be to "argue the merits without venting anger, and seek truth without harming others." Once criticism departs from the examination of the merits and substance of an issue and turns instead to personal attacks or disputes driven by emotion, it violates the ancient maxim of "establishing sincerity through one's words" and may even cross the legal and ethical boundaries of contemporary society. Amid the profound transformation of the media landscape, redefining the boundaries and reconstructing the ethics of contemporary literary and art criticism requires a return to rational dialogue that is both temperate and potent. This constitutes an imperative task for literary and art criticism in the present era.

■ Netnographies of Reading: A Research Path for "Reader Criticism" in Online Literature (Wang Yanding)

Abstract: Compared to the rapid development of online literature, the criticism of online literature scholars lags behind to a certain extent in effectiveness and influence. Meanwhile, readers' criticism of online literature possesses greater "transitivity" and "presence," yet it struggles to engage in dialogue with scholarly criticism. Behind this lies the issue that the ideological content of reader criticism has been underestimated, which is also related to the difficulty of presenting fragmented and personalized reader criticism systematically within the academic field. To address this problem, we can draw on and adapt Radway's "Ethnographies of Reading" method by developing it into "Netnographies of Reading". At the same time, we should promote the "participation" of scholarly criticism and the "out of the loop" of reader criticism. Through methods such as "immersion" and "participation," we can restore readers' reading methods and interpretive systems, convey authentic reader reading experiences to the academic field, and establish a two-way channel for the circulation of online and offline discourse.

■ The Aesthetic Reconstruction of Film-Game Integration and the Emergence of the "Cinephile-Player" in the Era of New Popular Literature and Art (Wu Xiufeng)

Abstract: Amid the wave of media restructuring brought by New Forms of Literature and Art for the General Public, the film-game integration is driving a structural transformation of film aesthetics, characterized by the deep interpenetration of narrative power, perceptual modes, and cultural subjectivity. As audiences acquire game-like practices such as manipulation, speed-adjustment, and participation through screen drifting, their attention structure shifts from contemplative gazing to an interventionist "quasi-player" (准玩家) mode. Moreover, as cinema moves from temporal narrative to the construction of spatial worlds, a core aesthetic tension emerges between "immersion" and "participation". Against this backdrop, the "cinephile-player" (影迷型玩家) emerges, combining the cinephile's reverence for cinema with the gamer's interactive impulse, and redefines viewing ethics through the oscillation between gazing and manipulating. However, this new subjectivity remains structurally embedded in capital and algorithms, necessitating the cultivation of a "critical participation" literacy that sustains reflection within engagement, so as to allow film aesthetics to truly flourish in the digital age amid the cacophony of voices.
